Board of Health meetings are held twice a month, on Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m., in the downstairs Town Hall Conference Room. The dates are posted at the entrance to the town hall, or information may be obtained by calling the above phone number.

The Board of Health is responsible for all public health issues, including enforcement of Title 5 Regulations, the State Sanitary Code, and Food Code. The Health Agent responds to hazardous waste spills, oil spills, housing, septage and trash complaints, and air and water quality issues.

The Board of Health inspects all restaurants and bed and breakfast establishments to ensure proper sanitary conditions and food handling techniques, and investigates complaints of food-related illnesses and communicable diseases. Recreational camps for children are inspected prior to opening each summer. The Board also contracts with local visiting nurse services to provide health screening and immunization clinics, maternal-child visits, and individual assessments to determine health care needs. The department works closely with the building department and offers technical assistance to citizens wishing to install or upgrade septic systems and to build or renovate homes.

Septic Pumpout Permits are obtained at the Board of Health office prior to having septic systems pumped. The fee at this time is $25.00.

Vehicle and Trash Stickers Vehicle stickers for entrance to Landfill are $25.00 and $10.00 for Seniors, age 65 and over and are available at Landfill Office only. Trash stickers may be purchased at the Oak Bluffs Landfill (Pennsylvania Ave), Our Market (New York Ave.), Jim’s Package Store (Lake Ave, downtown), DeBettencourt & Son’s Garage (New York Ave., and Tony’s Market (Dukes County Ave.) for $5.00 (1 per 40 gallon barrel).

Hazardous Waste collections are held four times a year at the Edgartown Wastewater Treatment facility, located on the Edgartown-West Tisbury Road, from 9:00 to 12 noon. The dates of hazardous waste collection are the 3rd Saturday of the months of May, July, September, and November.
